About Your Windshield and Auto Glass

More than likely the glass in your vehicle is made up of two different types of glass, laminated or tempered.

Laminated Auto Glass

On most vehicles the windshield is the only glass that uses the laminating process to provide a shatterproof glass. The process utilizes to identical pieces of glass and an adhesive vinyl layer in between the two. Rollers are used to remove and air pockets and ensure full adhesion to the glass. The laminated glass is a type of safety glass that prevents the driver and passengers from being thrown out of the front of the vehicle in the event of an accident.

Tempered Auto Glass

Tempered glass is manufactured by superheating the exterior of the glass to produce a glass that is much stronger than normal glass of the same thickness. For this reason it is often referred to as toughened glass. Most car door windows and back glasses are made of tempered glass. Small microscopic stress lines occur throughout the glass during this process allowing the glass to break into uniform sized pieces and prevent large shards of glass from injuring passengers.

Different costs are associated with each different piece of auto glass that we replace. The more obscure and less in demand glass pieces will usually be more expensive than a windshield even though they are much smaller pieces.
